    Photo Printing Overview

Photo printing at home requires an inkjet printer capable of producing accurate color output at sufficient resolution, combined with appropriate photo paper. Understanding the factors that influence print quality helps set realistic expectations and produce better results.

    Print Resolution

Print resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI). For photo printing, higher DPI produces finer detail and smoother color gradients. Most photo-capable inkjet printers produce output at resolutions between 1200 and 4800 DPI. For standard photo sizes (4x6, 5x7, 8x10), a resolution of 1200 DPI or higher from a quality inkjet printer produces results comparable to professional photo printing.

    Photo Paper

The paper used has as much impact on photo quality as the printer itself. Glossy photo paper produces vibrant, high-contrast output with a shiny finish that suits most color photos. Matte photo paper produces a softer, non-reflective finish that some prefer for portraits and artistic prints. Standard office paper is not suitable for photo printing and will produce dull, low-quality results.

    Borderless Printing

Many photo-capable inkjet printers support borderless printing on standard photo paper sizes (4x6, 5x7, letter). This feature allows photos to print edge-to-edge without white margins. Verify that the specific paper size you intend to use is supported for borderless output before purchasing.

    Ink System

Standard inkjet printers use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) ink sets. Some photo-specific printers add additional ink colors such as light cyan, light magenta, or gray, which improve tonal range and color accuracy for photographic output. These expanded ink sets produce more accurate skin tones and smoother gradients than standard four-color systems.

    Key Points

    • Use photo-specific paper — standard office paper produces poor photo quality
    • Resolution of 1200 DPI or higher is sufficient for standard photo print sizes
    • Glossy paper produces vibrant, high-contrast output; matte is softer and non-reflective
    • Borderless printing eliminates white margins for full-bleed photo output
    • Some photo printers include additional ink colors beyond standard CMYK for better tonal range
    • Print quality varies between printer models even at the same resolution rating
