    Printer Paper Types Overview

The type of paper used in a printer significantly affects output quality, reliability, and compatibility. Different printer technologies handle different paper types, and matching the paper to the printer and the job produces the best results.

    Plain Copy Paper

Standard copy paper (typically 20 lb bond / 75–90 gsm) is the most commonly used paper type and is compatible with virtually all inkjet and laser printers. It is suitable for everyday document printing, drafts, and general office use.

    Photo Paper

Photo paper is coated to absorb inkjet ink without spreading, producing sharp, vibrant photo output. Glossy photo paper produces a shiny, reflective finish. Matte photo paper produces a non-reflective finish. Photo paper is designed for inkjet printers — standard photo paper is not compatible with laser printers.

    Cardstock

Cardstock is a heavier paper (60–110 lb / 163–300 gsm) used for business cards, greeting cards, postcards, and other heavy-stock materials. Many printers support cardstock printing, but the maximum weight varies by model — check the printer's media specifications before printing on heavy cardstock.

    Envelopes

Most printers can print on standard business envelopes (No. 10) and many other envelope sizes. Printing on envelopes typically requires adjusting the paper path to avoid feeding issues. Laser printers should not be used with self-sealing or adhesive-backed envelopes, as the heat fuser may activate the adhesive.
